How Do I Configure TCP/IP for Windows XP?

Before You Start:

Windows XP installs with the default TCP/IP configuration for the Mediacom
Online Network. If you have a new machine with Windows XP or have just installed the Operating System, you simply need to connect your machine to your cable modem.

If your Windows XP TCP/IP settings have been changed since installation,
please follow the directions below. Also, make sure you have your Windows
installation disks or CD handy before beginning. If your Ethernet card was
supplied with a drivers diskette, be sure to have that available as well. (Note that Windows XP includes built-in drivers for most Ethernet cards installed by Mediacom technicians)

As with all software, you should consult your users manual or the help
files for detailed information. Mediacom Online provides the information that follows as a guideline only.

To configure TCP/IP for Windows XP:

  1. Click the START button in the lower left corner of the screen
  2. Click CONTROL PANEL

  3. Click NETWORK AND INTERNET CONNECTIONS and then click NETWORK
    CONNECTIONS

  4. Double-click the LOCAL AREA CONNECTION Icon

  5. The Local Area Connection Status window will appear

  6. Click PROPERTIES

  7. Under Connect Using, the Ethernet card to which the Local Area Connection
in question is pointing is displayed. Underneath, the components that are
bound to the card are shown, with a check box next to them if they are
currently active. Verify that there is a check next to TCP/IP, and place one
there if it is not checked. Highlight the INTERNET PROTOCOL (TCP/IP) option,
    and click PROPERTIES.

  8. The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window will open. Select the
GENERAL tab. For the Mediacom Broadband Cable Internet service to work
correctly, the configuration should appear as it does the image below -
Obtain an IP address automatically should be selected in the first section,
and Obtain DNS server address automatically should be selected in the
    second section.

  9. Click OK to finish
