How Do I Make My Computer Secure?

Mediacom Online Internet Service understands the concern about security issues. Cable networks are no less secure than other Internet access methods, but you should take proper precautions.

Here are some steps Mediacom Online has taken, as well as some things you can do to ensure your accounts are secure:

1. File and Print Sharing
Computer security is strengthened when file sharing is disabled. You will want to make sure the file sharing feature is always disabled on your system. Please click on the link below to access directions for disabling file sharing on your PC or Mac. You may use the BACK button on your browser to return to this page.

If you choose to keep file sharing enabled, please consider using password protection.

2. Anti-Virus Software
Another important step in ensuring the safety of your computer is to run anti-virus software. Make sure you are always running the latest version. The latest version can usually be found on the vendor's Web site. Anti-virus software runs in the background continuously to keep your computer safe from viruses that might be introduced by e-mail attachments, downloaded Internet files, floppy diskettes, software programs, etc. It is also recommended that you do not open file attachments received by e-mail unless you know the sender or the origin of the file.

Once you have installed an anti-virus software program, we recommend you configure the software to do the following:

  • Scan all files and memory on all of your hard disks

  • Set the program to run every time your computer starts

  • Set the program to run in the background

  • Set the program to scan floppy disks and downloaded files

  • Update the software once a month

3. Personal Firewall Software
A firewall is a special electronic barrier that filters network traffic and prevents unauthorized access to your computer. A firewall keeps hackers from changing, stealing or adding files to your hard disk and keeps out unwanted network traffic and Spam. With the explosion in Internet traffic, experts are now recommending that the average home user invest in a good firewall program.

If you are interested in personal firewall software, McAfee.com offers a Personal Firewall service. You may also opt for other programs offered by Network ICE®, Symantec or others. Please note that Mediacom Online customer care specialists cannot support personal firewall software.

4. Modem Filtering
Mediacom Online takes every precaution to prevent malicious activity from occurring on the network. One important activity is applying protective traffic filters to the cable modem in your home. These filters block certain types of Internet traffic that could otherwise provide would-be attackers with unauthorized access to your computer.

5. Operating Systems
Mediacom Online recommends using supported Microsoft® Windows or Macintosh® operating systems in conjunction with the Mediacom Online Internet service.

Mediacom Online does not provide support or endorse most third party applications. If you have questions, concerns or problems with a third party software application, you will need to contact the software manufacturer. In no event shall Mediacom Online, its agents or officers be liable for any damages whatsoever (including, without limitation, damages to computer Hardware or Software) arising out of the use of or inability to use the Software mentioned above, even if Mediacom Online has been advised of the possibility of such Damages.
