Macintosh Connectivity Problems


If you cannot gain access to the Internet through Mediacom Online after completing the instructions on how to manually re-configure your system, please follow the troubleshooting guidelines below.


Step 1 – Check your Computer and Operating System

1. Restart your machine; check that no disks or CD-ROMs are left in their drives.
2. Ensure that your computer’s operating system is running correctly, restarts with no errors.
3. Make sure no programs or applications are running.
4. Double click on the Internet Explorer icon located on your desktop to launch the application.
5. Do you have Internet access?
a. Yes, You are done, welcome to Mediacom Online.
b. No, Continue to Step 2.


Step 2 – Check your Cable Modem

Since there are many different cable modems you can use to access Mediacom Online, it is best to refer to the instruction manual provided with your cable modem for detailed operating instructions. Below are some basic checks that can be performed on your modem.
1. Check to see if the coaxial cable running from the wall to your cable model is firmly connected at both ends.
2. Ensure that one end of the network cable is firmly connected to the back of the cable modem and the other end of the cable is firmly connected to a built-in Ethernet port on your Macintosh.
3. If you are using a USB modem, ensure that one end of the USB cable is firmly connected to the back of the cable modem, and the other end of the USB cable is firmly connected to the USB jack on your Macintosh.
4. Check lights on modem to ensure connectivity.
5. Reboot modem.
6. Restart your Mac.
7. Double click on the Internet Explorer icon located on your desktop.
8. Do you have Internet access?
a. Yes, You are done, welcome to Mediacom Online.
b. No, Continue to Step 3.


Step 3 – Check your Mac Settings

1. Click on the Apple menu.
2. Choose Control Panels and select TCP/IP, this will open the TCP/IP Control Panel.
3. If the TCP/IP control panel does not appear, ensure that Open Transport is enabled.
4. If the TCP/IP control panel still does not appear, Open Transport must be installed. Please consult the Macintosh user manual for more information on installing Open Transport.
5. Once the TCP/IP control panel appears ensure you are in the Advanced Mode.
6. To switch into Advanced Mode, click on Edit Menu at the top of the desktop and select User Mode.
7. Select Advanced and click OK.
8. From the TCP/IP Control Panel
9. Select Connect via: Ethernet.
10. Select Configure: Using DHCP server.
11. Ensure that Use 802.3 is Unchecked.
12. Click Options.
13. From the TCP/IP Options box select, Make TCP/IP: Active
14. Make sure “Load only when needed” is Unchecked.
15. Click OK.
16. Close the TCP/IP control panel.
17. Click Save.
18. Restart your computer
19. Launch your browser by double-clicking the Internet Explorer Icon on your desktop
20. Do you have Internet access?
a. Yes, You are done, welcome to Mediacom Online.
b. No, Continue to step 4.


Step 4 – Check your Browser Settings

1. Launch your browser by double-clicking the Internet Explorer Icon on your desktop
2. Once Internet Explorer is open, click Edit located in the top menu bar
3. Select Preferences, this will open up the Internet Preferences box
4. In the Preferences dialog box, scroll down on the left hand side until you see Network
5. Click the triangle next to the word Network
6. Select Proxies, the proxy information appears on the right hand side of the dialog box
7. Ensure that Disabled is checked
8. Click OK
9. Close out the browser
10. Launch your browser by double-clicking the Internet Explorer Icon on your desktop
11. Do you have Internet access?
Yes, You are done, welcome to Mediacom Online.
