Does Mediacom Online Support Windows XP?
Mediacom Online strives to remain current with new software releases that are relevant to our service. It is our policy to test and certify the final released software version with our new systems and networks.
At this time, Mediacom Online does not offer support of the Windows XP upgrade process itself, but we do recommend several links which may be useful for you. We are carrying the official Microsoft Support Newsgroups for Windows XP on our news server for your convenience. These groups can be easily recognized with newsgroup names that begin with microsoft.public.windowsxp.
You should note that if you purchase a new computer with Windows XP pre-installed, that in some cases, support is handled by the computer manufacturer. Check your documentation for details.
Important Information on Modem and Ethernet Drivers to Insure Continued Connectivity:
Windows XP operating systems, both Home and Professional, are based on the Windows 2000 operating system. This means that before you upgrade you should insure that you have proper drivers for Ethernet Adapters and USB Cable Modems.
Mediacom Online has done limited testing and provides the following information to assist you in an upgrade to Windows XP, but does not guarantee that the information will apply to every upgrade scenario.
First, check compatibility using the Windows XP Upgrade CD:
- Select the last item on the menu to check system compatibility
- From the two choices presented, select the automatic option
If issues are found, each will be listed separately and a Details button will provide further information on hardware and/or software issues.
Most Mediacom Online supplied internal Ethernet cards (NICs) will have drivers included in Windows XP. If not, insure that you have installation diskettes or CD with Windows 2000 drivers. Windows 2000 drivers, in most cases, can be used with Windows XP.

Upgrading Linksys Wireless Adapters on Windows 98/98SE/ME and Windows 2000
Before you upgrade:
- Visit http://www.linksys.com/att/drivers.asp and download the driver for the type of wireless card in your system and extract the files to your hard drive by running the EXE file that is downloaded.
- Uninstall the wireless utility completely.
- Uninstall the current wireless driver.
- Reboot your computer
After the upgrade is completed, if Windows does not detect and install the Windows 2000 driver you extracted to your hard drive, you can install the driver from the device manager. Do not install the configuration utility. You can configure the card without using the add-on configuration manager:
- Click Start
- Click My Network Places
- Under Network Tasks, click View Network Connections (alternatively, you can right-click My Network Places and then click Properties)
- Right-click the connection used for the Internet
- Click Properties
Note that Windows XP may erroneously report your connection speed as 2MB.
